This is the Tom Obuya Family in Arusha. Tom, his wife Lillian (sitting) and children Agnes, Vanessa and Louis. Frieda (a student who is helping with the family) is standing. Tom is the Branch President, Lillian is the Primary President. Lillian works 12 hours/6 days a week as a security guard. Sunday morning she comes to church early to prepare for Primary. Frieda helps teach Relief Society. Tom and Lillian were baptized in Dar Es Salaam and then his work transferred him to Arusha. Frieda was baptized after the branch was organized in Arusha last year.

Why are their heads shaved? Is that a cultural thing?
Hair is something that was a surprise to me when we arrived. Men, women and children wear their hair very very short. I'm told that African hair doesn't grow very well or very long, so they braid extensions into their hair to make it longer. They leave the extensions in for 2 - 4 weeks. I think keeping it short is easier to care for. The first Sunday we were here a young boy was confirmed a member of the church--only it wasn't a boy, it was a girl. Mostly the females wear dresses and the males wear pants, but in Nairobi that is changing. So if you look at what the young children are wearing you can tell if it's a boy or a girl. I think the Kenyans have beautifully shaped heads and they look good without hair.
